Fast Facts
As you can see from this picture, Rowen School has a library! This
is exciting news for Library Build, because it means we will be able
to go through the existing collection to determine what it still usable.
The library looks okay, why
does it need to be renovated?

  • Rowen's library has not been
renovated or updated in 7 to 10
    years.

  • Most of the book collection is 10
    to 20 years old. Their
    Encyclopedia collection is from
    1986.

  • Most of the furniture is old and
    rickety, making it very unusable
for a school with students in
    Kindergarten through fifth grade!

  • There are no dedicated spaces
    for independent reading,
    classroom visits, or a librarian's
    desk.

  • The existing collection is
    organized through an old
    cataloguing system, not on a
    computer.
Why do they need a library fellow?

  • The school has not been using the library because of
the old collection, but also because there is not a
librarian on staff to manage classroom visits or to
organize the collection for student learning.

  • A librarian will keep track of what books are usable,
    checked out, or missing.

  • A librarian will create research classes, book clubs,
and other groups to increase student learning and
    understanding of the library.

  • A librarian will be able to work with teachers to
ensure that all classrooms are making the best use
of the library for their curriculum.

  • A full-time librarian will always be in the library,
ensuring that the library is never closed to classes or
    to independent learners and readers!
Rowen's very old cataloging system. This will
need to be computerized for today's use!
Empty, yet cluttered, space in the library.
